The
Raymond Proffitt Foundation is a public interest non-profit organization
concerned with the enforcement of environmental protection laws. It
helps individuals and grassroots organizations understand and change
government inaction to protect the environment, frequently solving
problems through discussion with agency officials. When discussion
fails, however, the Foundation will file citizen lawsuits against
government, companies or individuals violating the law.
In the past, the Foundation has sued on
various environmental issues, including water quality, wetlands, solid
waste and mining. In 1996, RPF won a major four-year lawsuit
resulting in the establishment of Federal antidegradation standards for
water quality in Pennsylvania. Similar standards were adopted soon
afterwards by the Commonwealth. Since that time, RPF and others have used
the principles won in that lawsuit to advance protection of surface waters
across Pennsylvania. |
